Congratulations to the King School Geography Bowl Team! They won their competition on Saturday at the Sandburg Mall. We are all very proud of our kids and coaches for making King School come out on top! This shows that with hard work and dedication, you can achieve your goals. Keep up the great work!
King School has a new phone number. It is 309-973-2012. This is not a long distance number for you. It will act like a normal Galesburg number when you call. We also have a new attendance phone number that is 309-973-2339. You can call this number to notify the school if your child will be out sick. Please call your child in sick before 9:00 am if he/she will not be coming to school.
The State of Illinois requires students entering Kindergarten, 6th and 9th grades to provide a school physical within one calendar year of registration for school. If you have a preschooler going into Kindergarten next year, or a 5th grader going into 6th, or an 8th grader who will be a freshman in August 2013, you may get their physicals at any time between today and August of 2013 and it will meet the requirement. Please do not wait for the summer rush to make your appointment!! Make it now!! Students who do not have the required physical in August will not be allowed to start school until they have their physical on file.
Check out the PTO page for news on this year's Holiday Shoppe. It will be held on the 4th and 5th of December and could use some more of Santa's Helpers (parents would be great too) to help out. The students love this annual event of shopping for their family and friends.
Remember to also check out the "School Newsletter" tab for the December Newsletter for King. There are a lot of special events planned this month for King. Don't forget to read the newsletter and look for any "special" names that are hidden it it. Happy Holidays! Galesburg's Attendance Initiative was featured on the front page of the Chicago Tribune, on Monday, November 12, 2012. You can read more about the Attendance Improvement Initiative at the District #205 Web site, or contact us with any questions you might have!
The Illinois State Board of Education has made 2012 student achievement data available to the public. You may use the School Report Card tab to access King's 2012 Illinois School Report Card, 2012 Interactive School Report Card, and other student achievement data.
As always, parents are encouraged to contact us to talk about the great things that are happening every day at King! Check out the PTO page in our Parent Resource section of the website. Spirit wear order forms are posted there and can be printed. The forms will also go home this week with the students. What a great time of year to show your school spirit!
Please remember to read your November issue of the King Newsletter. We have it posted under our parent resource page on this website. There are a lot of exciting things happening here this month at King!
Report cards will soon be available following the end of First Quarter. At the elementary level, report cards will be made available to parents by your child's teacher at Parent-Teacher Conferences. Please contact the school directly to arrange a meeting time.
We're Going Green! This year we will be using a mildly different layout for printing our Elementary Report Cards through Skyward, our student data management system. Doing so will reduce the amount of paper used for report card printing, streamline the process of generating report cards in our office, and save the District a considerable amount in printing costs, etc. Unfortunately, due to circumstances both unforeseen and beyond our control, we will not be able to print the Grade and Skill Mark Legend directly on the report card and retain a layout that is both user-friendly and saves resources and money. To remedy this, our existing Report Card Guide brochure, which explains what each grade and skill mark means, will also be made available along with the Report Cards by your child's teacher at the Parent-Teacher Conference mentioned above. While this slightly increases our paper use and printing costs for the first Report Card distribution, we believe it is vital that parents have all the information necessary to fully understand their child's progress and needs. Your child's teacher will offer you a copy of the brochure to keep and will be happy to discuss the meanings of the skill marks and grades. You Can Help, Too! We are confident that our efforts to reduce both resource use and costs will begin to be realized with subsequent grading terms this year and for many years to come. We encourage parents to keep the Report Card Guide in a safe place and refer to it throughout the year as needed. To further assist with our cost- and resource-saving efforts, links to electronic versions of the Report Card Guide and Grade Level Expectations brochures have been added to every elementary school's web site. You can find the links like this:
Comments On Reusable Envelopes Our commenting procedure remains the same this year. Each elementary student's report card will be enclosed in a sturdy and reusable envelope. The report card is yours to keep each term. Printed on each envelope is a space for your child's teacher to include comments and a space for parents/guardians to sign showing that you have read over and discussed your child's grades. Please return this envelope with your signature to school with your child during the week following Report Card distribution so that we may reuse them throughout the year. They are yours to keep or recycle at the end of the school year. What's Next? As schools throughout Illinois and many other states migrate toward the Common Core Standards, we may need to make further changes to some of the items on our report card. We'll do our best to keep you informed of these needed changes as we become aware of them. To learn more about the National Common Core State Standards (or "NCCSS"), visit the NCCSS Web site or click on the tab at right to browse through the new expectations. |
